The Fighting Irish Boys Tennis team competed in the OHSAA Sectional Tournament on Tuesday, May 12th, with three singles players and two doubles teams representing the Irish.
In singles competition, Danny McKnight opened tournament play with a strong 6-2, 6-1 victory over Brandon Rathbun of Woodridge High School. He followed that performance with another impressive win against Zac Dresch of Fairview High School by scores of 6-4, 7-5. McKnight’s tournament run came to an end in the next round against Ethan Smerglia of Elyria Catholic High School in a closely contested match, 7-6, 6-3.
Owen Griswold competed hard in his opening-round singles match before falling to Dylan Hernandez from NDCL, 6-0, 6-3. Andy Schafer also represented the Irish in singles play, dropping his first-round match to Alex Russell fromNDCL by scores of 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles action, the Irish duo of Jonathan Schnurr and Matthew Kalail earned a hard-fought victory over Gerret Miksche and Tangko Bolot of Lake Ridge Academy. The pair won in three sets with scores of 7-6, 6-2, and 1-0 (7). Jeremy Williams and Ben Nichols also competed for the Irish, falling in a competitive match to Kaleb Elek and Jaylin Streit of St. John School, 6-4, 6-4.
