Girls Basketball Battles Massillon in Overtime Loss

The Fighting Irish Girls Basketball team traveled to Massillon High School on Wednesday, January 14, for a highly competitive matchup against the Tigers. The junior varsity squad opened the evening by playing a half-game and earned a 33–14 victory.

The varsity contest was tightly contested from start to finish. The Irish held a narrow 20–17 lead early and carried a 30–29 advantage into halftime. The teams remained deadlocked throughout the second half, entering the fourth quarter tied at 41–41. Regulation ended with the score knotted at 56–56, forcing overtime. Despite a strong effort, the Irish came up just short in the extra period, falling 65–60.

Sophomore Sydney Ferguson led the Irish offense with 22 points, while junior Melania Cornute added 17 points in the loss.

The Irish now turn their attention to a busy weekend in Columbus. They will face Alter High School in the Battle of the Hawks Nest on Saturday, January 17, at Bishop Hartley High School, with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The team will then compete against Butler (IL) on Sunday, January 18th in the MLK Showdown, at Big Walnut High School, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Go Irish!
