Irish Girls Basketball Defeats Alter and Butler in Impressive Weekend Sweep

The St. Vincent–St. Mary Fighting Irish Girls Basketball team earned a pair of impressive victories this past weekend while competing in two tournament games in the Columbus area.

On Saturday, January 17, the Irish faced Alter High School in the Battle at the Hawks Nest hosted by Bishop Hartley High School. The team followed up the next day with a matchup against Butler College Prep (Illinois) at Big Walnut High School as part of the MLK Showdown. The Irish delivered strong performances in both contests, defeating Alter 47–27 and Butler 46–35.

Junior Melania Cornute and sophomore Sydney Ferguson led the way throughout the weekend. Cornute scored 17 points against Alter and followed that performance with 20 points in the win over Butler. Ferguson contributed on both ends of the floor, recording 7 points against Alter and 13 points against Butler. Freshman Aubrey Jackson also made an impact against Alter, adding 6 points in the victory.

The Irish return to action on Wednesday, January 21, when they host Brush High School in LeBron James Arena. Junior varsity tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM, followed by the varsity game at 7:30 PM.
