The Fighting Irish boys basketball team earned an exciting 54-53 victory over Walsh Jesuit on Friday, February 6th in a thrilling contest that came down to the final seconds.
Earlier in the evening, the Irish freshman and junior varsity teams both battled hard but came up just short, with the freshman falling 55-49 and the JV losing a close 34-32 decision. The varsity squad entered the night determined to finish strong and deliver a win for the program.
St. Vincent-St. Mary came into the matchup with a 9-8 record, while Walsh Jesuit stood at 3-13. The Irish set the tone early, jumping out to a strong start and taking a 25-20 lead into halftime. They continued to control the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors 17-9 to build a comfortable advantage.
Walsh Jesuit responded in the fourth quarter with an impressive rally, erasing a 15-point deficit to take a 53-52 lead late in the game. With the Warriors in the bonus, senior DeCarlo Prince stepped to the free-throw line in the closing moments and knocked down two shots to put the Irish back in front. Walsh Jesuit was unable to get a final shot off in time, and STVM held on for the one-point victory.
The Irish will return to action on Tuesday, February 10th with a road matchup against Shaker Heights High School. The evening will feature a tripleheader, beginning with the freshman game at 4:30 PM, followed by JV at 6:00 PM, and varsity at 7:30 PM.
